Salary and employment terms – in short
Working in Denmark as a medical doctor your salary and employment terms will be subject to a collective wage agreement. Below we have listed some of the main terms in the collective agreement.
Basic pay: For specialist doctor the basic pay is approx. 660.000 / EUR 88.000 p.a.
Qualification and supplementary pay: Certain functions in the hospital and certain qualifications can qualify you for an add on to your basic pay. The local union representative on the hospital will assist you in negotiating your eventual individual pay in addition to the basic pay.
Supplement for unusual hours and overtime: You will receive a supplement payment working evening, night and weekend. If you work more than 37 hours a week on average, you will be entitled to 50% overtime payment.
Working hours: The average working week is 37 hours consisting of shifts between 6 and 13 hours.
Pension scheme: You will be covered by the employers pension scheme from the first day you work. The monthly contribution from the employer is 17,5% of your pay.
Paid holiday: You are entitled to 6 weeks of holiday each year with full pay
Sickness: If you become Ill you are entitled to full payment including supplementary pay in the period you are sick.
Child´s 1st and 2nd day of Illness: In most circumstances you are entitled to full payment on the first and second day of your child’s illness.
Maternity/Paternity leave: Mothers are entitled to 22 weeks of paid leave. Fathers are entitled to 2 weeks of leave. On top of this mother or father is entitled to 6 weeks of leave with payment from the state.
Termination of employment: The notification from your employer is between 3 and 6 months depending on how long you have been employed.
